City of Edinburgh Methodist Church (Nicolson Square)

Recently upgraded and beautifully refurbished by leading conservation architects Page\Park Associates, this historic building lies in the heart of Edinburgh and dates from 1815–16. Designed to replace the first octagonal chapel in Edinburgh (demolished due to the extension of the New Town), this is Scotland’s only Grade A listed Methodist church.

A classical style church, designed by City Architect, Thomas Brown, it has been altered internally through the years, but retains an impressively simple, light and restrained interior. The eye is naturally drawn to a raised central cross within a small apse (the position of the original pulpit). Decorative ionic columns support a u-shaped gallery, now skilfully adapted to provide exhibition space.

The adjacent Epworth Halls reception opens into the Well Cafe with conservatory-style seating area overlooking the peaceful rear gardens. This is the hub for the wide variety of activities which take place in the building; Church and chapel for worship; smart rooms with high quality audio visual facilities for meeting; gallery for exhibitions and provides lift access to the whole building including to the Fair trade One World Shop. Ideal for conferences, concerts or as a city retreat, the building is also a major Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue in August.

This gathered congregation from the City of Edinburgh and beyond offer a warm welcome whether you are a visitor, interested in architecture or tracing your family history, in Edinburgh on holiday or looking for a church to call home. There is an extensive collection of Methodist artefacts relating to the story of Methodism in the City of Edinburgh which can be displayed on request. Introductory talks and guided tours can also be arranged.

Please check the website for up-to-date details of all events, activities and worship.
