The first Sheffield Methodist society founded by John Wesley in 1742. Members subscribed to build Norfolk Street Wesleyan Chapel, opened by Wesley in 1780.

The Methodist 'Forward Movement' reached out to poor working classes from the 1880s, and resulted in Sheffield in 1901 in establishing of the Wesleyan Mission. In 1908, the Victoria Hall was built on site of Norfolk St Chapel as the Mission HQ.
