The area around Westgate was the main centre for Primitive Methodism in Weardale and the site of an early 'Camp Meeting' in 1823. Dating from 1871, this chapel retains its Victorian pews, windows and cast iron columns, decorated to look like marble, supporting the gallery.

The chapel is status Grade II* listed.
